How Albie keeps students safe

Every chat box says so: Albie is an AI, and he can make mistakes.

Before a student has been learning for three hours in a row, a reminder asks them to take a break, and says again that Albie is not a person.

No one at Albie watches lessons as they happen.

If a student says anything that suggests they are unsafe, being hurt, or thinking about hurting themselves, Albie:

• stops the lesson and answers with warmth
• tells them they deserve help, and to talk to a trusted adult right away: a parent, a teacher or a school counselor
• gives them crisis help: in the US they can call or text 988 at any time, and call 911 if they are in danger right now
• doesn't go back to teaching until they seem okay

Albie can't call anyone, and he isn't a counselor. His job in that moment is to point the student to people who can help.

When a message looks like a worry about a student's wellbeing, the lesson is marked, and the student's parents, guardians or teachers can see the mark.

Albie can also email them about a wellbeing concern, and he tells the student when he does. If a student says someone at home is hurting them, Albie tells their teacher, if one is on file, and not their parent.

• He keeps every lesson suitable for school students. He kindly declines anything unsafe or inappropriate, and steers back to learning.
• He doesn't ask for personal details, such as a full name, an address, a phone number, a school or a password. If a student shares one, he reminds them to keep it private.
• He doesn't do assignments for a student to hand in. He helps them do the work themselves.
