Privacy Policy
Effective . Last changed
Albie is an AI tutor for learners of every age. This policy explains what information Albie collects, how we use it, who helps us run the service, and what you can do about it.
If you are the parent or guardian of a child under 13, please also read the Children's Privacy Notice. The rules for using Albie are in the Terms of Use.
The short version
- We collect information to tutor a child, to show their parents, guardians or teachers how they are getting on, and to run and bill for the service.
- Albie shows no ads of its own. There are no advertising cookies, and no analytics or tracking scripts. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
- We do not train AI models. Our agreement with Anthropic, which provides the AI model behind Albie, says that it does not train its models on lesson content.
- When a child talks to Albie, their speech is turned into text on their own device, and the audio never leaves it. Albie never turns on the camera: a photo a child takes of their work is an upload like any other.
- A parent or guardian can see what their child has done with Albie, and can delete the child's profile or the whole account at any time.
The rest of this page gives the details.
Who we are
Cadentic, Inc. makes and runs Albie. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean that company. "You" means the person reading: a parent or guardian, a teacher, or a student with their own account.
At launch, Albie is offered in the United States only.
How to reach us is under Contact us.
Who uses Albie
Families
A parent or guardian, who must be 18 or older, creates a family account. They add each child with a nickname and a grade, and choose how the child signs in: with a username and password that the parent or guardian makes, with an invitation sent to the child's own email address, or with no separate sign-in.
Students with their own account
A student who is 13 or older can create their own account, with a name, their grade, their email address and a password. A student under 18 needs the permission of a parent or guardian.
A student who signs up is first asked for their birth month and year. We do not keep the answer in our records; a cookie on the device remembers it for one day.
A child under 13 who tries to sign up on their own is asked for the email address of a parent or guardian. We use that address once, to send the parent or guardian a link. We do not save it in our own records. Our email provider keeps its record of that one email for 30 days.
Schools
We set up each school ourselves, under a written agreement with the school. At launch, a school cannot sign up by itself.
What we collect from adults
From parents, guardians and teachers, we collect:
- Your name, your email address, the name of your family or school, and your role in it.
- Your password. It is kept by our sign-in provider, and we can never read it.
- Billing details, if you pay for a plan. Payments go through Stripe: your card details go to Stripe and never reach our servers. We keep Stripe's customer and subscription identifiers, your plan and its status, the number of learners you pay for, and a one-way fingerprint of your card. The fingerprint is how each card gets one free trial; it cannot be turned back into a card number.
- A record of what you agreed to, and when: the Terms of Use, the Children's Privacy Notice for each child you add, a plan's renewal terms, and turning on extra usage. For a student's own account, the record also says that the student told us they are 13 or older.
- The emails we have sent you.
- If you joined the waitlist before Albie opened: your email address, and whether you asked for a family or for a school. We use it only to email you about Albie opening.
What we collect about children
In a family account, we collect a child's information only after a parent or guardian has set up the child's profile and given their consent. The Children's Privacy Notice explains how consent works, and what a parent or guardian can do.
We do not ask a child for more information than a lesson needs. Children cannot make their information public or contact other users: Albie has no public profiles, no chats between users and no public posts.
A child's profile
- A nickname. At a school: their first name and the first letter of their last name.
- Their grade, their language and their time zone.
- A username, if a parent or guardian makes one for them.
- Their email address, if a parent or guardian invites them by email, or if they are a student of 13 or older who signed up themselves.
- A password, if they have a sign-in of their own. It is kept by our sign-in provider, and we can never read it.
What a child does in lessons
- The messages they type or speak. Speech is turned into text by the browser on the child's own device: the audio never leaves the device, and only the text is sent.
- What they write or draw on the shared whiteboard, saved as images and drawing data.
- Photos and videos they upload, for example of their homework.
- Code they write in the built-in code editor.
- Their answers to quizzes and tests.
- Their homework and its status.
- Their progress: skills, misconceptions Albie has noticed, and summaries of lessons.
- Short notes Albie keeps to remember how the child learns. Albie is told to keep only things about learning, and a filter turns away notes that look like an email address, a phone number, a link or a street address. A parent or guardian can see each note and delete it.
- Marks on a lesson. When a message looks like a worry about the child's wellbeing, or looks like it contains personal details, Albie marks the lesson so that the child's parents, guardians or teachers can see it.
The camera
Albie never turns on the camera or watches through it. On a phone or tablet, the buttons for adding a picture can open the device's own camera app, so that a child can take a photo of their work. That photo is an upload like any other. If we ever add a feature that lets Albie use the camera, it will stay off for each child until a parent or guardian turns it on, and we will ask for your consent first.
Uploaded pictures and videos
Uploaded pictures are re-encoded, which removes location data. Uploaded videos are stored as they were uploaded, so a video may still contain metadata, such as the location where it was recorded.
What is collected automatically
Cookies
Albie uses a sign-in cookie, which keeps a person signed in. It also uses a few small cookies that make the site work. One remembers which family or school was picked, for up to a year. One remembers the answer on the age screen, for one day. Two are set by our hosting provider's load balancer (AWSALB and AWSALBCORS): they keep a browser with the same server so that a lesson is not interrupted, and they last up to 7 days. Cloudflare, which shields the site from attacks, sets no cookie in ordinary use. If it suspects an attack, it may ask a browser to pass a check, and then sets one (cf_clearance) so that it does not ask again for 30 minutes. There are no advertising cookies, and no analytics or tracking scripts.
Server logs and sign-in records
Our servers keep logs with timing information and IP addresses, for about 30 days. Our sign-in provider records the IP address and browser type of each sign-in. Counters that limit repeated sign-in tries hold an IP address for a short time, usually no more than a day. Cloudflare keeps its own technical records of the requests it carries, with IP addresses, under its privacy policy.
What cookies and IP addresses are used for
We use them only to run Albie: to keep a person signed in, to send a browser to the right server, to remember the age-screen answer, to limit abuse, such as password guessing and automated sign-ups, and to find and fix faults. We do not use them to contact anyone, to build a profile of anyone, or for advertising, and we do not give them to advertisers. Only our own company can read our logs.
Usage records
For each session, we record how much AI was used and what it cost.
Albie's voice
Albie's voice is generated on the device. For that, the browser downloads the voice model files from Hugging Face, which sees the device's IP address, as any website does. Nothing a child says or hears is sent to a speech service.
How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- tutor the child and remember their progress
- show parents and guardians, and at a school the child's teachers, the child's progress, homework, tests and Albie's notes
- send emails about homework, concerns and progress to the parents, guardians or teachers on file
- send account and billing emails
- bill for plans
- keep the service secure and working
- measure usage and cost
What we do not do
- We do not use personal information for advertising, and Albie shows no ads of its own. Some lessons show a YouTube video, and YouTube may put its own ads on it. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced player, so those ads are not personalized. A parent or guardian can turn videos off.
- We do not build profiles for marketing.
- We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
- We do not train AI models. Our agreement with Anthropic, which provides the AI model behind Albie, says that it does not train its models on lesson content.
Your choices
A parent or guardian can:
- see what their child has done with Albie, in the family dashboard: progress, homework, tests, and Albie's notes and messages
- turn off web search, videos and web pictures for their child
- turn off Albie's emails
- delete any one of Albie's notes
- delete a child's profile, with the lessons and records saved in it, from the child's page in the dashboard (Delete this profile)
- delete the whole account, from Account settings (Delete this account)
- ask for a copy of their child's information, by writing to privacy@cadentic.ai
Students who signed up by themselves can do the same for themselves.
For any other question or request about your information, write to privacy@cadentic.ai.
Your privacy rights
Wherever you live in the United States, you can ask us to tell you whether we hold information about you or your child, to give you a copy of it, to correct it, or to delete it. You can do much of this in the dashboard.
For anything else, write to privacy@cadentic.ai from the email address on your account. We answer within 45 days. If we cannot do what you ask, we will say why. You can appeal by replying with the word "Appeal": we will look again and answer within 60 days. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact your state's attorney general.
A parent or guardian can use these rights for a child.
We do not sell personal information, we do not use it for targeted advertising, and we do not collect, use or sell it to train large language models. Nevada residents can send a request not to sell their information to the same address.
Do Not Track and other companies
Albie does not track people across other websites, so it changes nothing when a browser sends a Do Not Track signal. No other company collects information about your activity over time and across websites through Albie, with one exception: when a YouTube video is shown in a lesson, YouTube (Google) receives the device's connection data under Google's privacy policy.
If you are under 18
You can ask us to remove things you put into Albie, such as messages, drawings and uploads. Ask your parent or guardian to delete them from the family's page, or write to privacy@cadentic.ai. Removal does not take copies out of our backups at once: those go within 30 days.
How long we keep information
This table is our data retention policy. It says what we keep, why, and when we delete it. We do not keep a child's information forever.
| What | How long we keep it | Why we keep it |
|---|---|---|
| A child's profile and lesson records: messages, whiteboards, uploads, code, quizzes, homework, progress and Albie's notes | Until you delete the profile or the account. If an account has no plan and nobody signs in for 24 months, we email a warning and then delete it. | Albie needs them to teach your child, to pick up where the last lesson stopped, and to show you their progress. |
| A profile or account that you delete | Removed from our live systems when you delete it, usually within minutes. Gone from our backups within 30 days. | Backups exist only so that we can recover from a failure. |
| Copies at Anthropic, which provides the AI model | Anthropic deletes lesson content within 30 days of receiving it. If its safety systems flag a conversation, it can keep the conversation for up to 2 years, and the safety scores it gave it for up to 7 years. | It keeps it to run the service and to look into possible abuse. |
| Emails Albie sent about your child | In our records until the profile is deleted. Our email provider keeps its copy for 30 days. | So that you can read them again on your child's page. |
| Server logs, with IP addresses | About 30 days. | To find faults and to stop abuse. |
| A parent's or guardian's email address typed by a child under 13 | Not saved in our own records. A scrambled form is held for about a day. Our email provider keeps its record of the one email for 30 days. | To send that one email, and not send it twice. |
| Invitations | The link stops working after 14 days. The record goes when the account is deleted. | To let the invited person join. |
| Billing records | As long as tax and accounting law requires, by us and by Stripe. | To keep proper accounts and to handle refunds and disputes. |
| The record of what was agreed to, and of a parent's consent | 3 years after the account closes. | So that we can show that a parent gave consent, and what a customer agreed to. |
| Usage and cost totals for an account's months, with no names and no lesson content | Until the account is deleted. | To bill correctly and to plan our costs. |
| One-way card fingerprints | 2 years. | So that a card cannot get a second free trial. |
How we protect information
- Connections to Albie are encrypted.
- Stored data is encrypted by our hosting providers.
- Access to each family's data is checked on every request, so that one family or school cannot see another's.
- Albie's emails to a parent, guardian or teacher carry a private link to that child's page. Anyone who has the email can open it, so please do not forward those emails.
- Access to our production systems is limited to our own company.
- If there is a breach, we will tell the affected families and regulators, as the law requires.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we post the new version on this page and change the date at the top. We keep a record of the version you agreed to.
